Historical Legacy Series: Dominating the rock landscape in the 80s, between the Heavy Metal ascendancy of the seventies and the Glam Rock of the 90s was the reign of Hair Bands, a lasting cultural phenomenon. The genre was defined by flamboyance: glam, big hair and attitude, hedonism, rebellion, anthemic choruses, soaring guitar solos, and just plain fun. No band better represents the genre than the Poison Dollys, formed on Long Island in 1981 by an all-girl group of 19-year-olds: Amy Bramer (Roulette), Mef Manning, Gina Stile, and Gail Kenny. They developed their sound and following by playing local rock joints on LI. Through their exceptional live show, the word spread quickly to NYC, where they came to the attention of the Invasion Group, who recorded their album Poison Dollys, released in 1985 on Invasion Records (Jem).
The album brought them to the attention of their male rock contemporaries, and they soon found themselves touring nationally with Aerosmith, Nazareth, Motorhead, Foghat, and others. They were the first independent band to appear on the cover of the internationally famous UK magazine Kerang (The world's greatest metal /punk/hardcore/rock music publication.
